Oh, I'm drooling just looking at these photos again.
Akash and I went to Nanglo Cafe & Restaurant to celebrate our 26th monthiversary earlier this December. (Yes, we still celebrate our monthiversaries but it's really just an excuse to eat delicious food at new places every month, haha.)
This time we headed to Aldershot, a town filled with so many Nepalese people, restaurants, and corner shops - it's like being in mini Nepal. The restaurant itself was originally a house so the interior looked like a family's home. During our meal, an auntie was casually making some momos in the kitchen right next to the dining area (seen in the photo at the bottom). I found that really sweet; the place has a very cosy feel to it.
Now let's talk about how divine the food was.
APPETISERS & DRINKS
Like always, we started off with sharing a few appetisers together.
Dahi Puri: crispy puri filled with mashed potatoes, chickpeas, spicy chutney and yogurt, topped with sev, onions and coriander
Chatpate: sour and salty mixture of puffed rice, tomatoes, coriander, onions and masala
Buff Sukuti: buffalo jerky served with onions, chopped cucumbers and tomatoes, roasted flattened rice and tangy chutney
It was my first time tasting buffalo meat, and oh my goodness.. It. Was. Amazing. Nepalese people really know how to cook their buff. Akash has been moaning about how much he misses eating buff meat (it's rare to find them in the UK), and now I understand why. Buff Sukuti doesn't have that strong, distinctive smell like beef does, and it's very chewy with such a flavorful, savoury taste that fills up your entire being (I'm not exaggerating).
The Dahi Puri.. oh, the Dahi Puri. I fell in love at first bite. The crunchy texture of the puri mixed with the mushy fillings and sourness of the yogurt and chutney tasted so heavenly, my taste buds almost melted. The Chatpate was a bit more on the salty side than sour but it was still quite tasty.
For drinks, we shared a (gigantic) glass of sweet lassi. Now this lassi is much thicker, creamier and tastier than the one I had at Gurkha Villa. The sweetness is just right, not too much and not too less.
Main dishes
Jhol Momo Soup: chicken dumplings in a thick, luscious jhol achar (soup) with a kick of spiciness
Buff Momo: steamed dumplings filled with buffalo meat, with tangy tomato pickle as a dip
I had the Jhol Momo Soup, and it may just be the best soup ever created for wintertime. The soup makes you feel so warm from the inside, and it's pleasantly very filling. The steamed momos tasted so delightful combined with the creamy, delicious soup. My baby had the Buff Momo, and it looked like he was in heaven; making frequent, satisfying 'mMMmM' sounds in between each bite.
By the end of the meal, our tummies and souls were satisfied on a whole new level. Nanglo Cafe & Restaurant is hands down the best Nepalese restaurant we've ever been to. This place is only about 30 minutes away by train from our university; you can bet that we'll be coming here again at least 3 more times before we graduate next year.
If you're ever planning on coming to Aldershot, I highly (highly) recommend you to eat here. You won't regret it, I promise.
With love,
