I don't know about you but I'm salivating just looking at these photos. (wipes drool)

Gurkha Villa was the restaurant that my classmates and I went to celebrate our success on our group coursework. We had a good time chatting while munching on scrumptious Nepalese food

Appetisers & Drinks

We decided to share the appetisers together. As described on their menu, the appetisers we ordered were:

  • Pani Puri: fried crisp, hollow puri served with a mixture of tamarind, chilli, masala, potato, water, onion and chickpeas

  • Samosa Chat: potato samosa flattened on a plate, topped with chickpeas, yogurt, onion and coriander

  • Aloo Dum: glazed potatoes, cooked to perfection in thick curry sauce

  • Puri Takari: puri with potato and chana

I really enjoyed eating all of them but my favourite has got to be Samosa Chat. It's got a perfect combination of sour and salty with a hint of spicy, and the texture of the crunchy samosa and onion combines so well with the soft chickpeas in your mouth. My god, just thinking about the taste is making me drool, haha.

We each ordered a lassi, a South Asian yogurt drink. Some of us got the banana one, others got the mango. I got the banana lassi, and I think it was alright. It's not as thick and creamy as I'd like but the taste was pretty decent.

Main dishes

We ordered our own main dishes (but we still sneaked a taste from each other's plates, of course).

  • Chicken Chilli Momo: fried dumplings in hot and spicy sauce topped with onion and coriander

  • Fried Veg Momo: fried dumplings filled with vegetables, with tomato pickle as a dip

  • Mixed Chowmein: stir-fried noodles with classic Nepalese flavourings such as garlic, ginger, coriander and sesame oil

  • Veg Thakali Khana Set: rice and vegetable curry (tarkari, daal, dahi, ghyu, achaar, papad and salad)

The Chicken Chilli Momo was mine, and it was a tasty, hot goodness. I actually couldn't finish it because they gave so much (10+ momos!), and I was already pretty stuffed from the appetisers so I took the rest for takeaway.

When the bill came, they served us some Lwang Sukumel (others may call it differently), a combination of herbs and spices Nepalese people eat as a refreshment after a meal. I tried it, and it's a bit too tangy for me. Lwang Sukumel is definitely an acquired taste. I'll stick to my bubble gum as a refreshment for now, haha.

Akash was busy with uni work so he couldn't make it but he asked me to bring some takeaway for him (not pictured): Chicken Chilli and Chicken Thukpa. Let's say when I gave the takeaway boxes to him, he devoured everything within minutes (AKA he really enjoyed it).

Overall, it was such a wonderful experience. The food was great, the atmosphere was lively and the girls were a joy to be with. It was actually Sheritta's and Catherine's first time trying Nepalese food, and they kept saying how amazing the food was.

If you're looking for a friendly, affordable Nepalese restaurant to eat in Aldershot, I would recommend this place, Gurkha Villa. I'm definitely coming back here again one day.

With love,
